The structure of content plays a crucial role in shaping user experience. With experience in over 10+ industries, one significant struggle across any industry is structuring content so that readers are not overwhelmed. What businesses often don't realize is that in Content Management Systems (CMS), identifying the right components is key to positioning your content effectively.

A well-organized and thoughtfully structured piece of content can make the difference between engaging your audience and losing them. Most times, the scope of work curated at the start of the project evolves as we dive deeper, and the actual content has to come into play. The journey from the vision of digital transformation to the implementation of platforms for content has been redefined with the new plug-and-play headless architecture. Based on my experience, here are some tips for businesses to consider when directing component design with experience designers and approving components:

1. Think Through and Evaluate What Kind of Information You Want to Share

When designing components, it's crucial to think through and evaluate the type of information you want to share with your customers. Understanding your audience's needs and preferences helps in creating content that is both valuable and engaging.

Tips:

  • Audience Analysis: Conduct thorough research to understand your target audience's demographics, preferences, and pain points.
  • Content Prioritization: Prioritize the most critical information and place it prominently within your components to capture your audience's attention.
  • Use Visual Elements: Incorporate images, infographics, and videos to break up text and provide visual interest. Visual elements can also aid in explaining complex concepts.
  • Include Calls to Action: Encourage user interaction by including calls to action (CTAs) throughout the content. Whether it's commenting, sharing, or exploring related content, CTAs keep users engaged.

2. Enhance Readability and Discoverability

One of the primary ways content structure impacts user experience is through readability and comprehension. Users often skim through content to find the information they need quickly. A well-structured article with clear headings, subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs allows users to easily scan and digest the content.

Tips:

  • Use Descriptive Headings: Break your content into sections with descriptive headings and subheadings. This not only aids navigation but also gives users a preview of the information.
  • Create a Compelling Introduction: Start with a strong introduction that clearly states the purpose and value of the content. This hooks the reader and sets the stage for what’s to come.
  • Keep Paragraphs Short: Limit paragraphs to 2-3 sentences to avoid overwhelming the reader with a wall of text.
  • Bullet Points and Numbered Lists: Use bullet points and numbered lists to present information in a concise and organized manner.

3. Facilitate Accessibility

Content structure also plays a vital role in making content accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Proper use of headings, alt text for images, and a logical content flow ensures that assistive technologies can accurately interpret and present the content.

Tips:

  • Use Alt Text for Images: Describe images with alt text to ensure users with visual impairments can understand the visual content.
  • Maintain Logical Flow: Ensure the content follows a logical order that makes sense when read aloud by screen readers.
  • Avoid Overloading with Multimedia: While multimedia can enhance engagement, ensure it doesn’t overwhelm users who rely on text-based content.

A well-structured piece of content keeps users engaged by guiding them through a logical flow of information. When users find content easy to follow, they are more likely to stay on the page longer, interact with the content, and return for more. In summary, component design directly impacts your content structure, which is a critical factor that can make or break a user's experience. By thinking through and evaluating the information you want to share, enhancing readability, facilitating accessibility, and helping users navigate with the right CTAs, you can ensure that your audience not only finds your content but also enjoys and benefits from it.
